What Is a Wickless Candle? And Why Is There No Wick?
Okay, so you've probably seen the term “wickless candle” and thought...
Wait. A candle... without a wick?
Yep. 😂
And before you start wondering whether we've just decided to call a bowl of scented wax a candle, let me explain.
A wickless candle is exactly what it sounds like: a candle without a wick. Instead of lighting it, you use a candle warming lamp to gently heat the wax and release the fragrance.
So you still get that amazing candle smell. You still get the cozy jar sitting on your table. You just don't have to light anything.
So... How Does a Wickless Candle Work?
Instead of using a flame to heat the wax, a candle warming lamp sits above the candle and gently warms it from the top.
As the wax heats up, the fragrance is released into the room.
That's it.
No complicated candle science degree required.
You put the candle under the warmer, turn it on, and let it do its thing.
Many warming lamps also have adjustable height, dimmable light, and timers, so you can adjust the experience depending on your space and how much fragrance you want.
But There Isn't a Wick?
Nope.
And please don't try to add one. 😂
Traditional candles use a wick to pull melted wax upward so it can burn. Wickless candles don't need one because the wax is being warmed from above.
That also means a wickless candle is not meant to be lit.
If you have one sitting on your counter and find yourself reaching for a lighter out of habit, put the lighter down. We don't need any adventures today.
Why Would I Want a Wickless Candle?
Honestly? They're just really nice.
Especially if you love having your house smell good but don't necessarily want to light a candle every time.
A few reasons people love them:
You Don't Have to Light a Flame
This is probably the biggest difference.
Your fragrance comes from the warming lamp rather than a burning wick.
There's No Wick to Trim
Traditional candle owners know the drill:
Trim the wick.
Light the candle.
Watch the wick.
Trim the wick again.
With a wickless candle, you can skip the whole wick situation.
You Still Get the Cozy Atmosphere
The warming lamp adds its own soft glow, so you still get that cozy little moment on your nightstand, kitchen counter, or coffee table.
Basically, your candle is still doing its job. It just has a different employee now.
Your Warmer Can Be Used Again
When you finish one wickless candle, your warming lamp doesn't go anywhere.
Keep it and grab another scent.
It's basically a long-term relationship with your candle warmer.
Wickless Candle vs. Traditional Candle
So which one is better?
Honestly, it depends on what you're looking for.
A traditional candle gives you the experience of a burning flame, the flickering light, and that familiar candle ritual.
A wickless candle gives you the fragrance without actually burning the candle.
Neither one has to replace the other.
You can have your traditional candles for those evenings when you want to light something and settle in, and a wickless candle for everyday fragrance when you want to turn on the warmer and forget about it.
Well... don't completely forget about it. You still need to turn the warmer off when you're done. 😂
How Do You Use a Wickless Candle?
It's pretty simple.
1. Put your candle on a stable, heat-safe surface.
2. Place it underneath your candle warming lamp.
3. Adjust the height of the lamp according to the lamp's instructions.
4. Turn on the warmer and let the wax heat.
5. Enjoy your fragrance.
6. Turn off and unplug the warmer when you're finished.
And, just like anything involving heat, don't leave it unattended. Keep it away from children, pets, and anything that really shouldn't be getting cozy with a heating device.
How Long Does a Wickless Candle Last?
This is one of those questions that doesn't have a perfect “it lasts exactly ___ hours” answer.
With a traditional candle, you're physically burning the wax.
With a wickless candle, you're warming the wax and releasing the fragrance.
Eventually, the fragrance will become lighter even though there may still be wax left in the jar.
How quickly that happens depends on how often you use your warmer, how long you warm the candle, the temperature, and the fragrance itself.
And once you've finished with your candle, don't automatically throw that pretty jar away.
Clean it out and give it a second life.
You can use it for little things around the house, storage, or whatever else you come up with.
Are Wickless Candles Worth Trying?
If you love home fragrance, I think they're worth trying at least once.
They're especially nice if you like having your home smell good throughout the day, enjoy the cozy look of a candle, but want something different from a traditional burning candle.
And honestly, sometimes you just want to walk into your house and think:
“Okay... this smells really good.”
That's the goal.
